Role of peripartum β-carotene supplementation in modulating blood biochemistry and endocrine status of lactating Kankrej cows

Abstract

The present study was conducted at the Livestock Research Station, S. D. Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar, to evaluate the effect of peripartum β-carotene supplementation on reproductive performance, biochemical, and hormonal profiles in lactating Kankrej cows. Eighteen advanced pregnant cows were randomly divided into three groups: Group I (control, basal diet), Group II (500 mg β-carotene/day), and Group III (1000 mg β-carotene/day). Supplementation was provided for 42 days, comprising 21 days before and 21 days after calving. Blood samples were collected on the day of calving, and at 15 and 30 days postpartum to assess serum total protein, cholesterol, progesterone (P4), estrogen (E2), and β-carotene concentrations.
