Management of midge fly, Procontarinia mangicola (Shi) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) infesting mango

Abstract

Midge fly, Procontarinia mangicola (Shi) is an important pest of mango causing severe damage to mango crop. The studies on efficacy of different insecticides against midge fly infesting mango were carried out at Department of Fruit Science, College of Horticulture, Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli, Dist. Ratnagiri (MS) India during 2024-2025. The data on overall mean of two sprays revealed that, all the insecticidal treatments were significantly superior in reducing the new shoot infestation over untreated control. The overall mean per cent new shoot infestation varied between 16.67 to 28.06 in different insecticidal treatments. From the data it is evident that the treatment T3 (Thiamethoxam 25 WG @ 0.007%) was the most effective with 16.67 per cent midge fly infestation but, it was at par with T2 (Imidacloprid 17.1 SL @ 0.005%) which recorded 17.22 per cent midge fly infestation. Among the other treatments, T4 (Bifenthrin 10 EC @ 0.007%) recorded 22.22 per cent midge fly infestation which was significantly superior to other treatments except T8 (Clothianidin 50 WDG @ 0.020%).
