Biochemical analysis in different varieties of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora)

Abstract

The present investigation was conducted during the Rabi seasons of 2023–24 and 2024–25 at the Instructional Farm, Jambuvadi, under the Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, College of Horticulture, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh, with the objective of evaluating the performance of chrysanthemum varieties under the agro-climatic conditions of the Saurashtra region. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) comprising eighteen varieties replicated thrice. The varietal treatments included: Deep Red, Punjab Gold, Pusa Guldasta, Dolly Orange, Red Star, Kirti Gold, Little Tubular, Geetanjali, Vijaya, Bidhan Rupanjali, Rekha, Aishwarya Gold, Aishwarya White, Punch White, Button Green, Disk Pink, and Border Red. The results revealed significant varietal differences across biochemical attributes such as Anthocyanin content in petals (mg/100g), Carotenoids content in petals (mg/100 g) and Chlorophyll content of leaves (mg/100g). Red Star recorded the highest anthocyanin content (34.74 mg/100 g), followed by Deep Red and Border Red, whereas Punch White had the lowest (0.49 mg/100 g). The highest carotenoid content (32.47 mg/100 g) was found in Dolly Orange, and the lowest (9.05 mg/100 g) in Punch White. Border Red showed the highest chlorophyll content (1.46 mg/g), followed closely by Deep Red, while Punch White had the least (0.43 mg/g).
