Key factors driving farm mechanization in agro-climatic zones of Telangana

Abstract

Farm mechanization plays a vital role in improving agricultural productivity, reducing labor dependency and enhancing farming efficiency. In Telangana, covering northern, central, and southern regions, mechanization adoption has been driven by labor shortages, government support and technological advancements. This study examines key factors influencing mechanization among farmers across three districts—Jagitial, Siddipet and Nalgonda—representing diverse agro-climatic zones. An ex-post facto research design was used, surveying 240 farmers through structured interviews. The findings categorize mechanization-promoting factors into social, economic and infrastructure-related aspects. Labor scarcity (65.64) and timely work completion (63.37) were the most influential social factors. Economic drivers included large landholdings (59.57) and entrepreneurship opportunities (54.25), while infrastructure support, especially the availability of Custom Hiring Centers (65.02) and government subsidies (63.41), significantly encouraged adoption. However, financial constraints remain a challenge for small and marginal farmers. Strengthening cooperative farming, expanding credit access, and improving training programs can bridge this gap. The study underscores the need for targeted policies, enhanced extension services, and public-private partnerships to promote sustainable mechanization, ensuring long-term agricultural growth and resilience in Telangana.
