Economic analysis of production and marketing of coriander in Assam

Abstract

With both leaves (cilantro) and seeds, coriander is a widely used spice and herb with important culinary and therapeutic uses. It is prized for its unique flavor, scent, and possible health advantages, which include enhancing the immune system, controlling blood sugar, and facilitating digestion. India is the world's largest producer, consumer, and exporter of coriander, with production reaching 973.97 thousand tonnes and a gross production value of US$ 1.43 billion in 2022-23. Among the various states of India, Assam ranks fourth in coriander production in India for 2023-24, with a total production of 28.52 kilotonnes. But according to various studies, coriander production in Assam is characterized by fluctuating trends, with a mix of growth and challenges in both production and marketing. Present study was undertaken to analyse the economics of production and marketing along with constraints associated with production and marketing of coriander in Assam. The average per hectare total cost of cultivation of coriander in Assam was found to be Rs. 1,05,895.97, with the average gross income per hectare of Rs. 3,63,675.00. The sample coriander farmers experienced an average benefit cost ratio of 3.43:1. In the major marketing channel of coriander wholesalers and the retailers facilitate the process of marketing and transacted 75 percent of the total marketed surplus of the sample farmers.
