Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) Regarding the Use of Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP) kit among lymphoedema and elephantiasis patients in Rural Blocks of Madhepura, Bihar, India

Abstract

Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), commonly known as elephantiasis, remains a significant public health concern in Bihar. The MMDP kit is a vital tool to manage morbidity and prevent disability in LF patients. However, the effectiveness of the kit depends on the community’s Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) regarding its use. Objective: To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice related to the use of the MMDP kit among LF patients in Singheshwar, Kumarkhand, and Madhepura (Murho) blocks of Madhepura District. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 50 LF patients. Data were collected using structured interviews and analyzed with descriptive statistics. A pie chart was used to represent the comparative KAP distribution. Results: 86% of patients had received the MMDP kit, but only 54% demonstrated appropriate knowledge. While 78% expressed a positive attitude, only 46% practiced daily care. There were evident gaps between awareness and regular use, especially among illiterate participants. Conclusion: Awareness and availability of MMDP kits are high, but regular use and proper practice remain suboptimal. Strengthening community-level training and follow-up is essential to improve outcomes.
