Successful management of acute kidney injury in a Belgian shepherd dog: A case report

Abstract

A 6-year-old male Belgian Shepherd dog was presented to the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC), Durg, Chhattisgarh, with melena, in appetence and vomiting after meals. Clinical examination revealed mild fever and pale mucous membranes. Hematology indicated anemia and leukocytosis, while serum biochemistry confirmed azotemia. Ultrasonography showed bilaterally hyperechoic renal cortices with poor corticomedullary distinction, consistent with acute kidney injury (AKI). The dog was treated with intravenous fluids (lactated Ringer’s and 5% dextrose), diuretic, antibiotic, gastroprotectants, nephroprotective agents and erythropoietin. By day six, clinical signs resolved, appetite returned and laboratory values improved. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, ultrasonographic evaluation and integrated therapy in the successful management of canine AKI.
