Surgical management of urethral prolapse in a dog: A case report

Abstract

A case of urethral prolapse in an eight months old, male American bulldog was diagnosed and treated successfully. The dog was presented with a complaint of blood drops oozing from the urethra. A small reddish, smooth-surfaced peanut-sized mass was detected surrounding the urethral opening. Urethral prolapse was confirmed on thorough clinical examination, and the prolapsed portion of the tissue was resected under general anaesthesia. The surgical wound was sutured using purse string suture pattern, opposing healthy urethral and penile mucosa, and an in situ catheter was placed for three days. The pet recovered and was able to urinate without any difficulties.
