Prevalence of helminth egg infection in pigs in several farms in North Sulawesi
Abstract
Several studies have shown that helminth parasite infection in pigs is relatively high. This study aims to measure the prevalence of worm eggs in the feces of pigs raised in several pig production centers in North Sulawesi. The benefit of this study is that it can serve as a basis for controlling worm infestation in pigs. This research was conducted using descriptive research method. The research object sample was 100 pig feces samples divided into livestock locations: Minahasa, South Minahasa, and North Minahasa. The sampling technique was carried out by using purposive sampling, by taking fecal samples from pigs based on the research variables, namely: age, sex and breed. Microscopic identification of worm eggs with the buoyancy test. The results of microscopic examination of worm eggs, obtained 3 types of worm eggs, namely: Ascaris suum, Hyostrongilus rubidus and Trychuris Suis. The prevalence of Ascaris suum egg infection was highest in male pigs at 16.7%, 17.9% in starter pigs and 18.4% in Landrace pigs. The prevalence of Hyostrongilus rubidus egg infection was highest in the sow group at 12.1%; in the finisher pig group at 28.6% and in the Yorkshire pig group at 15.6%. The prevalence of Trychuris Suis egg infection was highest in the cattle group at 14.3%; in the finisher pig group at 27.6% and in the Yorkshire pig group at 15.6%.
