Exploring the potential of phytochemicals in herbal plants for anti-clostridial drug development: A systematic review
Abstract
Herbal plants have long served as foundational sources for drug development across various traditional and modern medicinal systems. Their bioactive constituents phytochemicals play a pivotal role in the discovery of novel therapeutic agents. Given their broad-spectrum activity and lower toxicity profiles, phytochemicals have drawn considerable interest for combating drug-resistant pathogens, including Clostridium perfringens, the primary causative agent of gas gangrene. This review systematically compiles and evaluates plants reported to exhibit anti-clostridial activity, with an emphasis on activity on Clostridium perfringens. By consolidating this data, our study aims to support the identification of promising plant-based leads for future anti-clostridial drug development. These findings highlight promising plant-based avenues for combating resistant Clostridial infections.
