Effect of integrated nutrient management on brinjal yield a comparative study of organic and conventional approaches
Abstract
Brinjal (Solanum melongena) is an important vegetable crop globally, with significant nutritional and economic value. Nutrient management is a crucial factor influencing brinjal productivity, and Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) has emerged as a potential strategy to optimize nutrient availability while maintaining soil health. This study evaluates the effect of INM in a comparative framework with organic and conventional nutrient management approaches on brinjal yield and soil quality in a semi-arid region of Kenya. The research was conducted over two consecutive cropping seasons, with treatments consisting of organic farming (using compost and green manure), conventional farming (using synthetic fertilizers), and a combination of organic and inorganic inputs (INM). The study assessed growth parameters, yield, and soil fertility indicators, including soil pH, organic matter, and nutrient content. Results showed that while all treatments increased brinjal yield compared to a control, INM significantly outperformed both organic and conventional approaches in terms of fruit yield and soil health, suggesting that INM is an effective and sustainable practice for brinjal cultivation. This research provides insights into optimizing nutrient management for brinjal production in regions facing similar climatic and soil conditions.
