Processing and constraint analysis of Waigaon turmeric through FPO among selected farmers

Abstract

Waigaon turmeric, known for its medicinal value and grown traditionally in Wardha district, holds economic significance in the region. This study aimed to estimate the processing cost and identify constraints faced by farmers involved in turmeric powder production through two selected FPOs. Data from 120 farmers were collected using structured interviews. The total processing cost was ₹64.83 lakh, with fixed costs of ₹2.36 lakh and variable costs of ₹62.57 lakh. The unit processed 300 quintals annually at a cost of ₹21,278 per quintal, yielding a Benefit-Cost Ratio of 2.04 and net returns of ₹67.46 lakh. Raw material accounted for the highest share of cost (98.4 percent). Major constraints included unavailability of skilled labor, high machinery cost, poor storage and drying facilities, and electricity issues. The findings suggest that turmeric powder processing is economically viable, but improvements in infrastructure and labor availability are needed to enhance efficiency.
