Formulation and evaluation of ranbhendi antidiabetic herbal tea
Abstract
The increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus has prompted significant interest in alternative and natural remedies, particularly those derived from medicinal plants. This research focuses on the formulation and evaluation of an herbal antidiabetic tea utilizing Ranbhendi (Abelmoschus manihot), a lesser-known plant with potential hypoglycemic properties. The tea was developed through standardized procedures involving the drying, powdering, and infusion of ranbhendi leaves and flowers. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and phenolics, which are known to contribute to blood glucose regulation. The formulated tea was subjected to organoleptic evaluation, physicochemical testing, and in vitro antidiabetic assays including alpha-amylase inhibition activity. Preliminary results indicated promising antidiabetic potential, suggesting that ranbhendi-based herbal tea could serve as a complementary dietary intervention for managing diabetes. This study highlights the importance of exploring traditional plant resources for developing functional beverages with therapeutic benefits.
