Legitimacy, standardization, and ethical concerns in extension education: A critical review of the Indian context

Abstract

Extension education in India serves as a vital channel for disseminating knowledge, technology, and skills to rural populations. While it has expanded its functional base across agriculture, health, and community development, the discipline faces critical questions regarding its legitimacy, professional recognition, ethical framework, and curricular uniformity. This paper, through content analysis of institutional documents, extension literature, and academic research, evaluates the current status of extension education as a profession in India. It critically examines the absence of a national accreditation framework, lack of standardized ethical codes, curriculum inconsistencies, and weak institutional identity. The paper concludes with recommendations aimed at establishing extension education as a well-defined, ethically governed, and professionally recognized discipline aligned with national development priorities.
