Effect of different levels of sulphur and zinc on growth, yield and quality of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.)

Abstract

The present investigation entitled “Effect of Different Levels of Sulphur and Zinc on Growth, Yield and Quality of Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea L.)” was carried out during the Rabi season of 2024-25 at the Research Farm, Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture and Allied Sciences, United University, Rawatpur, Jhalwa, Prayagraj (U.P.). The experiment was laid out in a Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) with sixteen treatment combinations, comprising four levels of sulphur (0, 25, 35, and 55 kg/ha) and four levels of zinc (0, 5, 10, and 15 kg/ha), replicated thrice. The results revealed that combined application of sulphur and zinc significantly influenced the growth, yield, and quality parameters of mustard. Among the treatments, the combination of sulphur @ 55 kg/ha and zinc @ 15 kg/ha (S3Z3) recorded the maximum plant height, number of branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, seed yield, harvest index, and oil content. The improved growth attributes under this treatment translated into higher productivity and superior oil quality, indicating the synergistic effect of sulphur and zinc nutrition in enhancing mustard performance. The study concludes that the integrated application of sulphur and zinc at higher levels can be recommended for optimizing yield and quality of mustard under agro-climatic conditions of Prayagraj region.
