Therapeutic potential of Thunbergia: A phytochemical and pharmacological review
Abstract
Thunbergia mysorensis, commonly known as the Mysore trumpet vine, is an ornamental climbing plant with notable ethnomedicinal relevance in traditional Indian healing practices. Traditionally used to treat ailments such as cough, fever, liver disorders, and jaundice, the plant has shown the presence of key phytochemicals including flavonoids, phenols, tannins, alkaloids, and proteins-compounds typically associated with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities. While its relatives such as T. grandiflora and T. laurifolia have been extensively studied for their pharmacological effects, T. mysorensis remains underexplored. Preliminary reports suggest it may possess comparable bioactivity, justifying further scientific inquiry. The antioxidant and potential antimicrobial effects of T. mysorensis are likely linked to its secondary metabolites, which act via mechanisms such as enzyme inhibition, free radical scavenging, and microbial growth suppression. To fully evaluate its therapeutic potential, advanced phytochemical analyses (e.g., LC-MS/MS, NMR) and biological assays (e.g., antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic tests) are essential, alongside in vitro and in vivo evaluations for safety and efficacy. This study aims to bridge the existing research gap by exploring the phytochemical and pharmacological profile of T. mysorensis, thereby contributing to the growing interest in plant-derived medicinal agents and supporting its potential as a source of novel therapeutics.
