Viruddhahar (Incompatible Foods) as a causative factor in Svitra (Vitiligo): An Ayurvedic and contemporary perspective

Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry · 2025 · Vol. 14(4) · pp. 375–379

Abstract

Svitra, correlating with Vitiligo in modern medicine, is a dermatological condition characterized by depigmentation of the skin due to melanocyte loss. While contemporary medicine primarily attributes its pathogenesis to autoimmune and genetic factors, Ayurveda emphasizes a holistic approach, identifying Viruddhahar (incompatible food combinations) as a significant etiological factor. This article explores the Ayurvedic understanding of Viruddhahar, its proposed mechanisms in contributing to Svitra, and integrates contemporary scientific perspectives to provide a comprehensive view. It reviews classical Ayurvedic texts detailing Viruddhahar principles and examines modern research on diet, gut health, oxidative stress, and autoimmunity relevant to Vitiligo. The aim is to bridge the gap between traditional wisdom and modern science, proposing potential pathways through which dietary incompatibilities might influence the development or progression of Svitra, thus highlighting the potential for integrated therapeutic approaches.
