Bottlenecks in present day agriculture

Abstract

Present-day agriculture is a complex and dynamic sector essential for global food security, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability. Despite significant advancements such as high-yielding varieties, precision farming, and biotechnology, agriculture faces numerous challenges. Major bottlenecks include rapid population growth, climate change, water scarcity, land degradation, pest resurgence, labour shortages, food wastage, and lack of market awareness. These issues collectively strain agricultural productivity and sustainability. Population growth reduces per capita farmland and intensifies food demand. Climate change causes extreme weather events, impacting crop yields. Water scarcity, driven by overuse and mismanagement, undermines irrigation. Land degradation and soil nutrient depletion further diminish output. Pest resurgence from pesticide overuse and labour shortages due to rural-urban migration reduce efficiency. Food wastage and inadequate infrastructure add economic and environmental pressure. Finally, market unawareness, poor access to finance, and limited technology adoption hinder profitability. Addressing these issues requires integrated policy, innovation, sustainable practices, and improved infrastructure.
