Effectiveness of sex sorted semen for producing female calves in dairy cattle

Abstract

This present study observed the efficacy of sex-sorted semen in increasing the proportion of female calves in crossbred dairy cattle under field conditions. A total of 97 animals (heifers and cows) were divided into four treatment groups: Group I (25 cows inseminated with conventional semen), Group II (30 heifers with sex-sorted semen), Group III (30 cows with sex-sorted semen), and Group IV (12 heifers with conventional semen). The observed conception rates were 48.00%, 30.00%, 40.00%, and 41.67%, for Groups I, II, III and IV respectively. Correspondingly, the proportion of female calves born was 58.33%, 100.00%, 100.00%, and 50.00%, respectively. These results highlight the effectiveness of sex-sorted semen in significantly increase female calf births, particularly, in heifers, although a modest reduction in conception rates compared to conventional semen was noted. Overall, the use of sex-sorted semen presents a promising strategy for improving herd replacement and optimizing dairy systems.
