Ayurvedic approach to managing Vatarakta: A clinical case study

Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry · 2025 · Vol. 14(4) · pp. 289–291

Abstract

Vatarakta is an ailment described in Ayurvedic literature as a result of Vata dosha imbalance affecting the Rakta dhatu. Aggravation of Vata occurs due to strenuous activities such as long-distance travel on animals like elephants, horses, or camels. Simultaneously, Rakta becomes vitiated through excessive intake of salty, sour, spicy, or alkaline foods. The aggravated Vata, when obstructed by vitiated Rakta, further contaminates it. This interaction leads to a destructive cycle where the vitiated blood gets predominantly accumulated in the lower limbs, especially the feet. This combination of Vata and Rakta vitiation is termed Vatarakta, closely resembling Gout in its clinical manifestations.
