Computational fluid dynamic study of pulsatile blood flow through healthy and stenosed vertebral artery

Abstract

The vertebral artery is a significant vessel supplying blood to the posterior portion of the brain. Stenosis of this artery, can lead to significant cerebrovascular diseases like stroke and transient ischemic attacks. This paper presents a comparative Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study of blood flow in healthy and stenosed vertebral arteries. 3D models derived from medical imaging have been used to analyze WSS and OSI. The results indicate that stenosis induces high shear stress regions, which may contribute to the progression of the vascular disease. This study enhances the understanding of vertebrobasilar hemodynamics and supports diagnostic and therapeutic planning.
