Effect of fertility levels and fodder tree species on growth, yield, and quality of Napier grass under semi-arid conditions

Abstract

This study assessed the effect of varying fertility levels and fodder tree species on the growth, yield, and quality of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) under semi-arid conditions in North Gujarat. A three-year field experiment (2018-2021) was conducted in a factorial randomized block design with three fertility levels (50%, 75%, and 100% RDF) and three tree environments (Anjan, Ardusa, and open field). Results revealed that 100% RDF significantly improved plant height (144.72 cm), tillers (24.60/hill), crude protein content (13.40%), and forage yield. The highest green forage yield (59.78 t/ha) was recorded in open field conditions with 100% RDF. However, Ardusa + 100% RDF recorded the maximum equivalent green forage yield (509.72 t/ha) due to tree biomass contribution. The study recommends integrating Napier grass with Ardusa trees under full fertilization for sustained forage productivity and improved soil health.
