Effect of cumin (Cuminum cyminum) seed powder supplementation on the growth performance and carcass characteristics in broiler chicks

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of cumin (Cuminum cyminum) seed powder supplementation on the growth performance and carcass characteristics in broiler chicken. One hundred nighty two straight run day old commercial broiler chicks were randomly allocated to four treatments with four replicates and 12 birds in each replicate in a completely randomized design. As there was no cumin seed powder addition, treatment group T1 is regarded as the control group. Cumin powder was added in amounts of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 percent for treatment groups T2, T3 and T4, respectively. This study found that adding cumin powder at various levels did not significantly enhance body weight, weight gain and feed intake, although group T2 and T3 did achieve significantly (P<0.05) superior feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and livability. Except for the neck portion, dietary cumin supplementation did not significantly affect the carcass traits of broiler chicken.
