Phytochemical screening and CNS depressant studies of the leaf extract of Averrhoa bilimbi linn. (Family: oxalidaceae) using two animal models
Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the phytochemical screening of methanolic leaf extract of Averrhoa bilimbi Linn by using different types of test reagents and also investigate the CNS depressant effect in two types of animal models. Methodology: In this study, Averrhoa bilimbi Linn. Leaf extracts were prepared with methanol and phytochemical screening was assessed by using different types of test reagents. The CNS depressant effect was investigated in two types of animal models at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg using the open field and hole cross test in mice where diazepam was used as positive control. Results: A wide range of distinct phytochemical components were found in the findings of research on MEAB's phytochemical screening. According to the Open Field and Hole Cross Tests, the extract significantly affects motor coordination comparable to the standard Diazepam. Conclusion: The phytochemical studies revealed that the leaf's methanolic extract included reducing sugar, alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, and carbohydrates. This plant possesses potent CNS depressant activities, according to the findings of the Open Field and Hole Cross Tests.
