Effect of tillage practices and sulphur levels on sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Agronomy farm, School of Agriculture, Suresh Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur (Rajasthan) during kharif, 2024 on loamy sand soil with objective to “Effect of Tillage Practices and Sulphur Levels on Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)”. The sixteen treatment combinations consisting of four each tillage practices (zero, minimum, reduced and conventional tillage) and sulphur levels (control, 20, 40 and 60 kg/ha) were tested in factorial randomized block design with three replications. Conventional tillage significantly improved the plant dry matter accumulation over zero and minimum and statistically at par with reduced tillage. Adoption of conventional tillage produced the significantly increased dry matter accumulation plant-1 by 19.30, 11.65 and 3.27 per cent at 30 DAS, 26.07, 15.65 and 3.85 per cent at 60 DAS and 20.25, 12.20 and 3.54 per cent at harvest, over zero, minimum, and reduced tillage, respectively. The conventional tillage gave higher number of seeds capsule-1 which was 22.30 per cent higher over zero tillage. Conventional tillage recorded the straw yield 2337.68 kg ha-1 which was significantly higher over zero and minimum tillage by 60.56 and 23.46 per cent, respectively. Increasing level of sulphur up to 60 kg ha-1 significantly increased dry matter accumulation and yield attributing characters (no. of capsules plant-1, no. of seeds capsules-1) over control and 20 kg S ha-1 and remained at par with 60 Kg N ha-1. The different levels of sulphur didn’t influence the test weight of sesame. Use of sulphur 60 kg ha-1 produced the maximum seed yield (830.11 kg ha-1) which was increased by 39.94, 14.32 and 4.53 per cent over control, 20 and 40 kg S ha-1. Net return was significantly higher with conventional tillage and sulphur 60 kg/ha.
