Post-herpetic myalgia mimicking malaria: A diagnostic challenge in an endemic region: A case report

Abstract

We report a rare case of a 24-year-old female from Navi Mumbai who presented with fever, myalgia, and abdominal pain. Despite a recent clinical diagnosis of herpes zoster infection, she tested positive for Plasmodium vivax. Persistent myalgia following antimalarial therapy and laboratory evidence of iron deficiency anemia raised the possibility of concurrent post-herpetic myalgia, a recognized sequela of herpes zoster. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by coexisting infections and underscores the importance of a comprehensive diagnostic workup in febrile illnesses, especially in malaria-endemic areas.
