Organizational change management in higher education institutions: Adapting to digital transformation and innovation
Abstract
In an era of rapid technological advancement, Organizational Change Management (OCM) has emerged as a strategic necessity for higher education institutions (HEIs) undertaking digital transformation. This study examines how OCM frameworks help HEIs manage the human, cultural, and structural shifts required to adopt and sustain digital innovation. Drawing on recent literature and empirical survey data from 130 respondents, the paper identifies key drivers of digital change, such as technological advancements, stakeholder expectations, and competitive pressures. It highlights prevalent challenges including lack of strategic vision, limited resources, resistance to change, and digital literacy gaps. Analysis reveals that successful digital transformation depends on clear leadership, strategic alignment, inclusive decision-making, and robust professional development. The research emphasizes the importance of integrating technological upgrades with change-ready institutional cultures. Findings also stress the need for enhanced online learning platforms, AI applications, and cybersecurity as future innovation priorities. The paper proposes a practical framework combining clear vision, stakeholder engagement, cross-functional collaboration, and sustained training. Recommendations include allocating adequate resources and strengthening partnerships to maximize digital initiatives. The study concludes that effective OCM enables HEIs to navigate digital disruption, enhance teaching and learning, and maintain global competitiveness in an increasingly digital educational landscape.
