In vitro antidiabetic activity of Phloridzinum 6X via alpha amylase inhibition assay

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a major global health concern characterized by rising morbidity and mortality, primarily due to insulin resistance or impaired insulin secretion. As a lifestyle disorder, its prevalence continues to increase, largely influenced by poor dietary habits and sedentary behavior. Although numerous pharmacological treatments are available, their long-term efficacy and safety remain a challenge. In this context, the alternative medical systems under AYUSH have gained attention for their potential in managing chronic conditions through holistic approaches. One promising therapeutic strategy involves targeting enzymes such as alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, which play key roles in carbohydrate digestion and glucose absorption. Inhibition of alpha-amylase, in particular, can significantly reduce postprandial hyperglycemia. Phloridzinum, a homeopathic preparation derived from the bark of apple tree roots, has shown potential in managing diabetes. This study investigates the alpha-amylase inhibitory activity of Phloridzinum 6X in vitro, demonstrating a notable increase in percentage inhibition, thereby suggesting its potential anti-diabetic effect.
