TLC profiling and bioautographic analysis of antimicrobial agents in Ashwagandha, Giloy, rosemary and oregano

Abstract

In this study, leaf extracts from four medicinal plants Withania somnifera (ashwagandha), Tinospora cordifolia (giloy), Salvia rosmarinus (rosemary), and Origanum vulgare (oregano) are examined for their phytochemical makeup and antibacterial qualities. To find bioactive chemicals, the study used a variety of extraction procedures, qualitative phytochemical analyses, and cutting-edge methodologies like Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and bioautography. Alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, and terpenoids were among the important phytochemicals found in the data; Salvia rosmarinus and Origanum vulgare had particularly high concentrations of alkaloids and tannins. The extracts showed varied levels of bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Klebsiella pneumonia in antimicrobial testing, indicating that the active ingredients might be polar in nature. The results enhance our knowledge of these plants' chemical profiles and possible therapeutic uses, emphasising the value of combining traditional wisdom with cutting-edge scientific techniques to investigate the therapeutic potential of these herbal resources. To clarify the precise mechanisms of action of the discovered phytochemicals and their potential for pharmaceutical development, more investigation is necessary.
