Character association study in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Abstract

A correlation coefficient analysis involving twenty economically significant traits was conducted using Gossypium hirsutum L. genotypes at the Cotton Research Station, Nanded (Maharashtra). The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all traits, indicating considerable genetic variability within the studied material. Seed cotton yield showed a significant positive correlation with boll weight, germination percentage, seed vigour index-II, seed dry weight, and upper half mean length (UHML). These positive associations suggest the possible involvement of shared genetic factors influencing these traits in a similar manner. Traits that are positively correlated with seed cotton yield may serve as valuable selection criteria in cotton breeding and improvement programs.
