Waterscaping: A comprehensive review of integrating water features into sustainable landscape design
Abstract
Waterscaping, the art and science of incorporating water features into landscape design, plays a pivotal role in enhancing aesthetic appeal, promoting ecological sustainability, potential for promoting mental well-being and supporting biodiversity. This multifunctional practice includes a diverse range of elements such as ponds, waterfalls, streams, fountains and constructed wetlands, each contributing uniquely to the visual and environmental quality of outdoor spaces. With increasing urbanization and climate change pressures, waterscaping has evolved from ornamental design to a crucial tool in sustainable landscaping, integrating water-efficient systems, native vegetation and rain water management techniques (Rain garden alliance 2021; Fawaz 2018). Principles guiding effective waterscaping include ecological balance, integration with the natural landscape, proper circulation and filtration, climate adaptation and minimal maintenance requirements (Booth and Jackson 1997; Hammer 2003). When executed with environmental sensitivity, waterscaping not only enhances the sensory experience of landscapes but also contributes to urban biodiversity, groundwater recharge and microclimate regulation. This review explores the history, types, design principles, ecological impact and current trends in waterscaping, emphasizing sustainable practices and the integration of water management strategies. This review also address challenges such as maintenance and water conservation, providing a holistic view of role of waterscaping in modern landscape architecture.
