A study on constraints faced by the farmers in adopting natural farming in Himachal Pradesh
Abstract
Natural farming is a method of agriculture that is based on traditional techniques, utilizing the natural processes and cycles of ecosystems to cultivate crops without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial inputs. The present study was carried out in the Mandi and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh through a simple random sampling technique. This study mainly focused on the constraints faced by respondents in the adoption of natural farming. The problems were analysed by using the Garrett Ranking technique. The study revealed several critical constraints hindering natural farming adoption. Economically, the major issues were the initial low price of natural produce and inadequate access to credit. Infrastructural limitations such as the absence of training institutions and certification agencies also posed significant barriers. Technological challenges included the non-availability of natural inputs, poor access to quality seeds, lack of standard practices and limited research support. Environmental constraints like pest and disease infestations and delayed ecological benefits further complicated the adoption process. Additionally, production-related hurdles such as unfavorable agro-climatic conditions and poor-quality seeds were prevalent. Educational and communication barriers, including lack of technical knowledge and limited expert guidance, were also found to be significant. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to address these constraints through policy support, infrastructure development, capacity building, and awareness programs. Strengthening institutional support, improving market access and enhancing farmer training can significantly improve the adoption and sustainability of natural farming. These factors highlight the weak links, which need to be strengthened for promoting natural farming widely.
