Preparation and assessment of polyherbal emulgel: A research-based approach to topical herbal therapy

Abstract

The research focuses on the formulation and systematic evaluation of polyherbal emulgels designed for effective topical drug delivery. The primary aim was to exploit the synergistic therapeutic potential of multiple herbal extracts within a stable emulgel system, offering a natural and efficient alternative to conventional single-herb or synthetic formulations. Six emulgel formulations (F1-F6) were developed using oil-in-water emulsion techniques with suitable gelling agents and evaluated for physicochemical parameters such as colour, consistency, homogeneity, phase separation, pH, viscosity, spreadability, drug content, swelling index, and extrudability. Among them, F3 and F4 showed superior performance with optimal pH (5.5 and 5.9), high viscosity (25,670±130 cP and 29,450±105 cP), and excellent spreadability (32.1 and 35.7 g.cm/sec), along with good extrudability and controlled drug release profiles. The drug content across all formulations was consistent, indicating uniform drug distribution and formulation stability. The swelling index data supported the potential for sustained drug release. Overall, the polyherbal emulgels demonstrated enhanced physicochemical properties, improved skin compatibility, and ease of application. These advantages highlight their potential over single-component or synthetic agents, particularly in managing localized skin disorders. Future studies may focus on in vivo efficacy, safety evaluations, clinical trials, and scale-up for commercial production, positioning polyherbal emulgels as promising candidates in herbal topical therapy.
