Family-centric resource optimization in integrated farming systems: Development of a DSS sub-module for Jharkhand

Abstract

This paper describes the development of a Decision Support System (DSS) sub?module for harmonizing the household food needs to the farm level production in the Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) of Jharkhand. Based on demographic and land-holding information, the system calculates the family-wise nutritional requirements and connects?them with seasonal crop plans for average productivity. It then?does surplus-deficit analysis and generates optimized advisories to attain food self-sufficiency. It applies nutritional science to agronomic planning, and provides a replicable approach to?nutrition?sensitive agriculture for resource?constrained rural areas. The method can be used for data-driven planning of small holders farmers promoting nutritional security and land?efficient production.
