Vermicomposting: A sustainable approach to waste management and enhancing soil fertility and crop productivity
Abstract
Vermicomposting, a novel approach to waste management, offers a sustainable solution for enhancing soil fertility and promoting eco-friendly crop production. This study investigates the impact of vermicompost on soil properties, crop yield, and nutrient uptake in a controlled agricultural setting. Earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were used to break down organic waste, resulting in a significant reduction in waste volume and the production of a nutrient-rich vermicompost. The results show that vermicompost significantly improved soil structure, increased nutrient availability, and enhanced microbial activity, as well as it characterized by high levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Consequently, crop yield and nutrient uptake increased substantially, demonstrating the potential of vermicomposting as a sustainable tool for crop production. The findings of this study highlight the benefits of integrating vermicomposting into agricultural practices, offering a viable alternative to synthetic fertilizers and promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable crop production.
