Biochemical abnormalities and mood disturbances in students with good academic performance

Abstract

Academic performance refers to the success students attain in their academic pursuits. It encompasses many factors, including grades, test scores, participation in academic activities, research, and overall academic performance. Participants were recruited from different universities in Najaf government including Islamic university and Kufa university, Iraq, from October 2022 to January 2023. The students were of two types: those who succeeded in the first round (n=32) of last year's exams and those who did succeed in the second round (n=54). The age of participants was matched, all of whom belonged to male gender. The result reveals that students with good academic achievement as marked by passing first-round examination have higher Hamilton of depression rating scale (HAMD) and Hamilton of anxiety rating scale (HAMA) than students in the second-round category. Moreover, first-round students have lower HDL and Zn levels than students in the second-round category. Thus, students with good academic achievement as marked by passing first-round examination are more depressive as well as anxious than poor academic achievers as marked by passing their second-round exam.
