Climate-resilient agricultural engineering techniques: Innovations and future directions
Abstract
Climate change poses a significant threat to global agricultural systems, affecting crop productivity, resource availability, and the livelihoods of millions of farmers. In response, agricultural engineering has emerged as a key enabler of climate resilience by developing technologies and systems that help adapt to and mitigate these impacts. This review highlights recent innovations in climate-resilient agricultural engineering, including water-efficient irrigation systems, soil conservation practices, protected cultivation structures, and sustainable farm machinery. It also examines the role of digital technologies—such as remote sensing, GIS, and AI-powered decision support tools—in enhancing climate adaptability. By evaluating case studies from diverse agro-ecological regions, the paper underscores the importance of integrating engineering solutions with climate-smart practices to ensure food security and sustainable development. The review concludes with a discussion on current challenges, policy needs, and future research directions to promote widespread adoption of climate-resilient technologies
