Phytochemical analysis of Capsicum annuum L., (Khola chilly) of Goa

Abstract

The Khola chili, grown in the hilly slopes of Khola Village in Goa, is a unique and highly valued variety, recently awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Government of India. This chili's distinct qualities are influenced by the specific geo-climatic conditions of the region, making it an important agricultural product for Goa's marginal farmers. A study was conducted to analyze the ecophysiological properties of Khola chilies, comparing them with the commonly sold Byadgi chili. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of carbohydrates, proteins, flavonoids, and alkaloids in varying amounts. Soil analysis highlighted the significant impact of soil quality on the phytochemical content of Khola chilies, showing superior levels compared to Byadgi. The study also reveals the role of women in promoting sustainable agricultural practices, food security, and the preservation of traditional farming techniques. These factors together contribute to the popularity and economic importance of Khola chilies.
