A review on conservation-based research on Trionychidae (order: testudines) in the Indian subcontinent

Abstract

Commonly known as soft-shelled turtles, the Trionychidae family is a group of freshwater and terrestrial (a few marine) turtles that lack scutes (hard shell). Several studies have been conducted on these fascinating species, especially on the ecology, morphology and conservation. However, there hasn’t been enough research done on their population status, habitat and feeding ecology, and genetic constitution of the species found across the Indian subcontinent. This literature review focuses on three decades worth of research (1993-2024) from the Indian Subcontinent. The study focuses on excavating research gaps in Trionychidae research which can also help us get an overview on reports on turtle illegal trade, exploitation and conservation efforts.
