Bioengineering advances in soil health and nutrient management
Abstract
Soil health and nutrient management are foundational pillars of sustainable agriculture and global food security. Traditional agronomic practices often rely heavily on chemical fertilizers, which can degrade soil quality and harm the environment over time. Recent advances in bioengineering have introduced innovative tools to enhance soil structure, fertility, and biological activity while minimizing external inputs. This review highlights key developments in genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs), plant-microbiome engineering, biochar-based soil amendments, biosensor technologies, and precision nutrient delivery systems. These bioengineering strategies offer targeted, adaptive, and ecologically sound approaches to restoring soil health and improving nutrient use efficiency. Emerging technologies, such as CRISPR gene editing and nano-enabled soil monitoring, are also discussed for their potential to revolutionize soil management practices. The integration of biological solutions with digital agriculture represents a promising pathway toward sustainable and regenerative farming systems.
