Epidemiological characteristics of imported malaria cases in Baghdad Al-Karkh- Iraq from 2020-2024

Abstract

Background: Imported malaria is a burden of the free malaria counters and Iraq is one of them. Which remains a significant health issue with global travel, immigration and refuges increasing the risk of imported malaria. This study aimed to assess the various epidemiological characteristics of imported malaria into Bagdad Al-karkh in 2020 -2024 Methods: Data were gathering from the malaria section of control Infectious Diseases Iraq, where reported in Bagdad AL-Karkh during 2020 - 2024. The data set included information on sex, age, address, nationality,, and cause of infection Plasmodium species of imported malaria came to bagdad AlKarkh as foreign immigration, working and tourism purposes and s through the strong case detection program Appling in all health institutions mainly AL-Salhyia and Green Zoon). The diagnosis and classification of imported malaria cases depend on microscopically examination Data analysis by an excel software Results: This study investigates imported malaria cases in the Baghdad Al-Karkh- Iraq from 2020 to 2024. During this period, 128 imported cases were reported, with Female (87%) more than males mainly in the age group (23-27year) (46%), 97%. of cases came from abroad endemic countries mainly Africa and 3% from Sudan and India, there is two cases are Iraqi residents returning from malaria-endemic areas. Plasmodium falciparum (95%) were the main cause.
