Morphometric analysis of watershed using remote sensing and GIS: A case study of Darna River Basin in Maharashtra, India

Abstract

This study focuses on the Darna River Basin in Maharashtra, covering 1,308 sq. km. Geospatial tools such as QGIS, ArcGIS, and Cartosat DEM were used for watershed delineation, morphometric analysis, and conservation planning. A drainage density of 1.3524 km⁻¹ indicates moderate permeability, while bifurcation and relief ratios suggest structural control and erosion risk. The basin's semi-circular shape points to high runoff and soil erosion potential. In Belu Village (673.94 ha), cadastral mapping identified 22 streams and existing conservation structures, including two farm ponds and a cement nala bund. These contribute to reducing runoff and enhancing groundwater recharge. The study demonstrates the utility of GIS-based analysis in integrated watershed management and provides insights for sustainable soil and water conservation.
