A comparative study of academic achievement in smart and traditional classrooms among senior secondary students in Ghaziabad
Abstract
The integration of digital technology in education has revolutionized classroom instruction, leading to the emergence of smart classrooms. This study aims to comparatively analyze the academic achievement of senior secondary students taught in smart classrooms and traditional classrooms in CBSE-affiliated schools in Ghaziabad district. A total sample of 200 students—equally distributed across male and female students from the Science and Commerce streams in Classes 11th and 12th—was selected using random sampling. The research employed a quantitative comparative design and data were collected through academic records validated by school authorities. The students were categorized based on the type of classroom instruction received: Smart Class (technology-integrated, interactive learning) and Traditional Class (conventional chalk-and-talk methods). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and independent sample t-tests to determine statistically significant differences in academic performance. Findings revealed that students in smart classrooms consistently outperformed their counterparts in traditional classrooms across all categories—male and female students in both science and commerce streams. The t-values computed for each group indicated statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in favor of smart classrooms. These results suggest that smart classroom environments enhance engagement, conceptual clarity, and retention, contributing to improved academic outcomes. This study underscores the importance of expanding digital infrastructure and teacher training to promote smart learning environments, especially in senior secondary education.
