Problems and prospects of sunflower growers in central dry zone of Karnataka

Abstract

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is a significant oilseed crop grown in the Central Dry Zone of Karnataka due to its drought tolerance and short duration. In 2019-20, our country produced 298 million tonnes of food grains with rice and wheat being the primary staples contributing 104 and 102 million tonnes, respectively. Pulses accounted for 26 million tonnes, sugar and its products 31 million tonnes and 12 million tonnes of edible oils were produced. In order to meet the projected demand of 402 million tonnes of food grains by 2047- 48 it would be necessary to increase production manifolds in dry land. Present study was conducted in Chitradurga district of Karnataka state to identify the constraints in adoption of sunflower production technology. 60 sunflower growers were selected among them 30 small farm growers and 30 big farm growers were selected randomly. The data were collected through interview schedule. Results indicates that uneven distribution of rainfall, bird damage, pest and disease incidence (capitulum borer and leaf spot), high cost of production and low price for the produce were major constraints faced by small and big farm sunflower growers and suggestions expressed by sunflower growers were providing minimum support price, disease and drought tolerant hybrids, crop insurance and timely availability of inputs at lower price.
