Unveiling the potential of nano urea and its influence on tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) crop

Abstract

Nitrogen, a crucial nutrient for plant growth, is often applied in excess, leading to environmental degradation and reduced crop efficiency. Nano urea, a novel fertilizer, has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing crop productivity while minimizing environmental impact. In view of this a study entitled “Unveiling the potential of nano urea and its influence on tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) crop” was conducted at the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot (2022-2023). The study employed a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 12 treatments, replicated three times and the treatments comprise of different nitrogen levels i.e., 100, 75 and 50 percent applied through urea and nano urea (2 ml L-1). The results revealed that, the plants treated with 100% RDN: 50% as basal dose + nano urea at 30 and 45 DAT (T4) achieved the maximum plant height (114.76 cm), number of fruits per plant (34.08), fruit weight (67.68 g), and yield per hectare (56.97 t ha-1). This treatment also yielded the highest gross returns (Rs 683620 ha-1), net returns (Rs 453843 ha-1), and benefit-cost ratio (1.97), making it the most economically viable and profitable option due to the synergistic effect of increased yield and reduced costs.
