Assessment of the agricultural background and perspectives of farm youth

Abstract

Young farmers represent a substantial resource with the capacity to address the primary issues of the 21st century. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in agriculture is booming section. Ex-post facto research design was used in the present investigation. This study was carried out in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. A sample size of 120 farm youth was selected as primary respondents for the study. Proportionate random sampling method was used to select 10 farm youths from each village, thus 120 farm youth from the 12 villages in four selected blocks of Coimbatore district. More than half of Farm Youth (53.33%) were found to be in the age group of 26 to 30 years, two-fifth of the Farm Youth (41.67%) were diploma holders, more than two-fifth of Farm Youth (44.16%) had small size (above 2.5 to 5 acres) of land holdings, nearly half of the Farm Youth (46.67 per cent) had high farming experience (above 8 years), nearly two third half of the Farm Youth (62.50%) belongs to medium level of annual income, nearly two-third of Farm Youth (65.83%) had medium level of contact with extension agency contact, nearly two-third than half of the Farm Youth (65.00%) had medium level of innovativeness, more than half of the Farm Youth (55.83%) had medium level of risk orientation, more than two-third of Farm Youth (69.17%) belonged to medium level of achievement motivation, three-fourth of the Farm Youth (75.00%) had medium level of decision making ability, nearly two-third of Farm Youth (61.67%) had medium level of scientific orientation and majority of Farm Youth (60.83%) had medium number of ICT tools usage were studied in details.
