Transport connectivity and the evolution of rural service Centres: Analysis of Karnal district, Haryana (2000-2001 Baseline study)

Abstract

Transport connectivity is a foundational driver of rural economic development and spatial integration. This study presents a baseline spatial analysis of the road and rail transport network in Karnal District, Haryana, using data from 2000-2001. The research focuses on the role of transport infrastructure in shaping the hierarchy and spatial distribution of rural service centres. Passenger flow patterns based on private bus routes were analyzed to complement limited commodity flow data. The findings reveal significant disparities in transport accessibility across the district’s physiographic regions, with implications for service delivery and rural development. While recognizing that substantial infrastructural changes have occurred since this baseline, the analysis offers valuable historical insights for understanding transport-led rural transformation and informs future research on spatial inequalities in North India.
