Haematological and blood biochemical values in chemically restrained healthy male Nilgais (Boselaphus tragocamelus) in a Zoo environment

Abstract

The haematological and blood biochemical values of eight chemically restrained full grown adult male Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) were analysed statistically to establish baseline parameters. The mean and SD values are haematological parameters were: Haemoglobin 11.48±1.39 g/dL, Haematocrit 34.98±3.81%, Red Blood Cell count 6.20±0.50 million/cmm, Mean Corpuscular Volume 56.73±2.54 fl, Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin 18.48±1.25 pg, Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration 32.93±3.47 g/dL, Platelet count 263578.25±56933.24 cells/cmm, White Blood Cell count 4561.88±1586.19 cells/cmm. The differential leukocyte count included Neutrophils 54.60±6.07%, Lymphocytes 31.71±5.15%, Monocytes 3.69±1.60%, Eosinophils 2.60±1.14%, and Basophils 7.40±3.48%. The mean and SD values for blood biochemical parameters were: Urea 31.13±10.51 mg/dL, Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) 15.26±5.32 mg/dL, Creatinine 1.68±0.18 mg/dL, Uric acid 1.90±0.35 mg/dL, Total protein 6.38±0.63 g/dL, Albumin 3.16±0.77 g/dL, Globulins 2.85±0.57 g/dL, Albumin-Globulin ratio 1.29±0.26. Enzyme activity levels measured included Alkaline Phosphatase 83.25±23.76 U/L, Aspartate Transaminase 123.38±50.36 U/L, Alanine Transaminase 43.00±5.26 U/L, and Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase 13.39±1.53 U/L. Bilirubin levels were recorded as Total Bilirubin 0.11±0.05 mg/dL, Direct Bilirubin 0.05±0.02 mg/dL, Indirect Bilirubin 0.06±0.04 mg/dL and serum Calcium was 8.29±0.26 mg/dL. These values provide essential baseline data for interpreting blood profile and optimizing health care management in captive Nilgai populations.
