Prevalence and pathological features of canine mammary gland tumors

Abstract

The present study was carried out in 50 spontaneous canine mammary gland tumors to record their occurrence and examine their cytological and histopathological characteristics. The age of occurrence of mammary gland tumors ranged from 4 to15 years with an average age of 9.55 years. Highest incidence was noticed in age group of 10 to 12 years followed by 8 to 10 years old dogs. Highest occurrence of mammary gland tumor was noticed in Non-descript breeds followed by that in German shepherd dogs. Gland wise occurrence revealed, the last two pairs exhibited higher susceptibility, with incidences of 43.28 percent in caudal abdomen and 34.33 percent in inguinal gland. For cytology FNAC was collected from 50 dogs. Out of these, 84 percent of cases were diagnosed as carcinoma, 8 percent as adenoma and remaining 8 percent as non-diagnostic samples due to poor cellularity. On histopathological examination out of 50 cases 43 cases were identified were malignant and 07 cases as benign tumours. The canine mammary gland tumors were further classified into malignant, special and benign types and further classified into specific subtypes. Of these tumors carcinoma complex type was the most common type.
