Evaluation of antioxidant & pharmacological activity of Ficus Religiosa for the management of wound healing potential in diabetic Swiss Albino rats

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that impairs wound healing due to oxidative stress and delayed inflammatory responses. Ficus religiosa, commonly known as the sacred fig, possesses various bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The present study investigates the wound healing potential of Ficus religiosa leaf extract in diabetic Swiss albino rats. Diabetes was induced using streptozotocin (STZ), and wounds were created using the excision model. Treated groups received topical application of Ficus religiosa extract ointment. Biochemical parameters, wound contraction rate, epithelialization period, hydroxyproline content, and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, GPx) were evaluated. The extract significantly improved wound closure and antioxidant status compared to diabetic controls. These findings suggest that Ficus religiosa may offer an effective natural therapeutic option for diabetic wound management.
